Emergency Dentist

Dental emergencies are stressful and often painful. At Nova Dental, we want to relieve that stress and pain. If you need an emergency dentist, we will see you today during our regular office hours—even if you’re a new patient. Our North Haven, Wallingford, and Cromwell locations are open Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm, and some Saturdays from 8 am to 4 pm.

If it has been a long time since you’ve seen a dentist, we understand you may feel nervous. It’s common for people to put off dental care for various reasons until a painful emergency happens. Our caring staff doesn’t judge, and we leave space in our schedule for emergency patients.

Emergency Toothache Relief

The most common dental emergency is a toothache. Usually, a toothache is caused by decay that eats through the tooth’s enamel to its interior, the pulp. That leaves a pathway for debris and bacteria, causing an infection. As your body floods the pulp with immune cells to fight the infection, the pulp swells inside the tooth. That causes severe pain. During your appointment, we will get you out of pain and make a plan to prevent it from coming back.

Sometimes trauma to a tooth will make it crack. That too allows food debris inside the tooth, leading to infection. Dental infections can be a health hazard, potentially spreading to surrounding tissues and the bloodstream. So even if an infection isn’t very painful, it’s important to have it treated.

Anxiety and the Emergency Dentist

Hopefully, with regular cleanings and checkups, you won’t have any tooth decay. If you do, we can fix it in its early stages before it becomes an emergency. But many people fear going to the dentist, so they miss out on routine care.

A common fear is pain, especially if you’ve had a bad experience with a dentist in the past. Sometimes when you’re very anxious, Novocain alone doesn’t work. To make sure you don’t feel pain, we offer sedation dentistry. Once you’re sedated, you’ll feel relaxed throughout your appointment. Novocain will work more effectively, giving you a pain-free experience. Even though you’ll be awake, you likely won’t remember your treatment later.

The sedation method we use will depend on your needs. Our options are:

  • Nitrous oxide

  • Oral sedation

  • IV sedation
